Double Page Spread

This is my second attempt of producing a double page spread. The one i made first time round did not look professional enough. I decided to go ahead and change add a few more things to my double page spread. Firstly i adjusted the picture and added another 2 pictures to the bottom of the right hand side of the page to show i have more than just 2 type of shots, by adding 2 pictures the audience can then see more looks from the their favourite artist. Also i decided to move the mast head to the left of the page to make the article more appealing and stylish. Overall i think the second attempt of the double page spread is so much better than the first.

Double Page Spread

This is my double page spread. For the background i used a gradient along the right hand side of the page, it makes the page look stylish as i used a purple tone to go with the house style of the magazine. Purple is shown throughout the magazine and ensures the house style runs throughout the magazine. Keeping the colours to purple and black keeps the magazine consistent. On the right on the second print screening, this shows all the different layers of the image, background and text. For the layout of the interview i have used column form, this is how magazine set out interviews therefore i have used the same layout and keeping to the style of any other magazine. For each question, i have used the colour purple and made the text bold to make the questions stand out to the audience. The answers are in black below the questions. I edited the image by airbrushing and sharpening it, this made the image appear to look more sleek and professional. She appears to be smiling, this will gain audiences interest as she appears to be showing a soft side of her personality. "The new and upcoming artist" this makes the audience interested in the artice and makes them want to read more about her as the title seems to be saying the interview will give the audience on information they want to hear about their favourite artist.

Contents page

Here is my magazine contents page, I edited the image to make it appear more professional by increasing the vibrance and saturation. I also added a vector mask to make her lip seem more pigmented to stand out and reflect on the R&B style of bold make-up. I cropped the image to take away excess background that was unncessary and added a white box to be the contents background. At the beginning I had to enlarge the image and click alt at the same time to make sure the pixels didn't stretch the image. For the headline of 'CONTENTS' I made it white and added a stroke to come from the centre, this allowed the text to have its own individual house style. I kept with the house style colours of purple and black to make the magazine seem consistent. For the page numbers,  I made them purple in britannic bold and added a stroke from the outside in black to make them stand out. I added subheadings and small explanations to show the reader what is on each page and hopefully persuade the reader to look at the stories. I used buzz words like 'EXCLUSIVE' and 'LATEST' to make the stories seem extravagent.

Original picture

I adjusted the vibrance, airbrushed the client, sharpened the client and used the liquify tool to make her face thinner. I then added a masthead and headlines and edited them by adding drop shadows and strokes. My target audience is for teenage girls, therefore the colour range of purple and white distinguishes the magazines house style, compared to other teenage magazines such as Smash hits. The purple and white theme makes the magazine look professional and persistant throughout.

Here is my final product, I added a banner at the bottom, a barcode, price tag and website, another headline and added a vector mask so the clients head will be in front of the text.

Double Page Spread Analysis

Charter Of Values

This is the Deyes High School charter of values.  Deyes High school community should undertake and obtain these commands. They include; commitment, enthusiasm, kindness, a forgiving attitude, honesty, co-operation, value& respect all people, trust, fairness, to be responsible for your own actions. This is the schools ideology of what characteristics each student should have to be a better person and role model for each other in the society of school life, not only should they be obtained in school but also outside of school, which means setting a good example for other students and people. Each value is aimed at every student at Deyes High School. This charter of values is important as it has an effect on how students are and how they should be as a person.

College Magazine

My college magazine is for Deyes High. I decided the colours on the front page would be the same colours as the schools uniform, blue and elements of red. For example the background is blue with an outline of red which ties in with the schools colour scheme which makes it look professional. I combined magazine features such as a motto, masthead and captions to go with each image. Changes I made in the final version compared to the mock version was that I decided not to include a specific headline or tagline below the headline as the captions below the images are taglines as well captions and the motto was enough to entice the readers. If I had of put all of those on the front cover, it  would have probably been far too cluttered. Less clutter on the front page makes it look more modern and neat which will definitely appeal to both parents and students. I have used captions underneath each picture to explain what the picture is about but to also entice the reader into taking a look into this magazine, these can be seen as taglines as they are explaining stories what are inside the magazine.  Unlike the two college magazines I analysed I have kept this front cover not too plain and not too cluttered, keeping it all to one font, using the font called ‘Tahoma’ which is a very classic font. I used features such as bold to make the masthead, motto and taglines all stands out on the page, all this text is as important as each other text. “Care, courtesy and common sense’ is used as the motto which is placed underneath the masthead, this is the official school motto, it tends to stick in your mind as it used a rule of three, so therefore i used this as it is very effective.  Both images on this front cover are kept to a equal size underlining each other, this makes it look neat and professional, this is another change I made to my mock up as I decided by using just only two images would make the front cover not look too cluttered and tacky as I wanted to keep it looking professional but yet still rather simple. While taking the images I took into consideration the 2/3’s which is used when shooting medium shots. This is used for the most effective images. I made sure this was perfected as quality images would entice the reader and make the magazine look professional.  I have also included the school logo on the top right hand corner which is the offical school logo. On the date line I have also included the word “newsletter".

Genre Mood Board& Genre Analysis

The musical genre I have chosen is Hip-Hop/R&B. The music magazine industry doesn’t seems to be missing a lot of this genre. The change and popularity of hip hop music has increased through the 2000s; The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem sold over ten million copies in the United States and was the fastest selling album of all time, adding a new tone to hip-hop. Hip-Hop has opened the path for new genres in which the style has diverted from its origin. In the late 2000’s there began a revitalization of hip-hop, which gave it another name ‘alternative hip-hop’, not only appealing to the hip-hop audience but also to different genres. This genre needs more recognition as well as R&B.  Artists associated with this genre are; Eminem, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Jay-Z, etc.
Contemporary R&B is a music genre that combines
elements of hip hop, soul, R&B, pop and funk. It was popularized by artists such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Some of the most prominent R&B musicians today include artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti, Ciara, Beyoncé, Aaliyah, Alicia Keys R. Kelly, Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown , Rihanna and Trey Songz.

Cohens Moral Panic

Cohens moral panic still applys today.

Condition/episode/person/group emerges a threat to societal values and interests.
Threats to our society, some examples are;
Terrorism

Knife crime/ Teenagers
Gun crime
Scandal-Expenses
PM's
Immigrants

Contruct folk devils, one person represents group which becomes hatred.
For example- "Yobs/Hoodies" who are teenagers are becoming the "follk devil". Society needs control folk devils in the media. Folk devil occurs when theres un-rest in society. For example;

Recession

Focused on MP'S and benefit cheats.
MP'S and government- Ripping country off and becoming folk devils.

Historical Perspective
Music Halls- Lower social standard who goes their- Rude shows/ bad songs.
Football teams where picked through religion, this still happens in scotland.

Features
  • Concern- Behaviour is a big threat
  • Voultility- Short lived- erupted trouble
  • Students- Seen as "folk devils", contructed to create clear division between them and us.
  • Consenus- Threat posed by this group
  • Disproportionally- Exageration of evidence- scale of the problem
Listening to music people become inspired by lryics. Some cases have proven this point. Artists such as eminem and 50 cent, write unnapropriate lryics about killing, etc. These lryics cause bad reactions.

Feminism In Media

Feminism is a perspective for looking at media texts, feminists would see most media outputs as being the product of a patriarchal or male dominated order aimed at disempowering woman.

Feminism was the response to societys assumptions that woman should be subservient to men.
Main theorist for feminist- Laura Mulvey. This is the most recognised theory. Academic feminist theory emerged as a response to this uberation. Patriarchy is a form of society ruled by men through the figure father to whom are all subordinate.

Laura Mulvey and the Male Gaze.
This theory argues that cinema audiences look in two ways at a film;
-Voyeuristically
-Fetististically
Cinema audiences watch a film without being watched by the characters. Usually in a darkened room, so audience cannot see them. Therefore we are almost voyeurs watching people on screen. This leads to two affects;
Objectivication- Of female characters in relation to this controlling (male) gaze.
Narcissistic Identification- (men watching men on films) with an ideal image section the screen. They tend to see themselves in actors)

Society- Expect certain level of beauty when watching a film.
Voyeurism- You turn represented figure into a fetish.
Fetishism- Marilyn Monroe is the most iconic woman, she is seen as what the feminine form should be. She's celebrated by men for her beautiful looks but considered as an object. She has a role as a woman. Hollywood films have male protagonist and assume male audience. Females are seen as glamorous and Marilyn Monroe is seen as this. This is why front covers of magazines aim towards having woman on the cover looking feminine and glamorous. A certain image is expected from all woman which is to be beautiful, a small size and glamorous. For example Beth Ditto was situated on the front cover of NME appearing naked, covering certain areas but showing a lot of skin. This is going agaisnt society expectations, as normally only woman seen as fetishism woman would be situated on front covers. Of corse, this front cover caused controversy and broke the rules which caused a lot of speculation.

Semiotic Theory

Semiotic Theory (Saussure made)
The semiotic theory is signs and colours given to signify something. For example when we see the sign of the sun shining, it signifies brightness so therefore happiness is signified.

Sign- Signifier- Signify.
For example:

Rain- Moody Music- Depression/Emo
The colour Red- Liverpool, love, lust, anger
Red-Romance- Love
Winter- Rain- Depressed
Sunshine- Summer- Smiles

Colour gives a sign- somethings signified. (+mis-en-scene)
